It is a fascinating series that depicts Cesar Millan going into homes of people who are having trouble with their dogs. His goal is "to rehabilitate dogs... to train people." He has seen overwhelming success in dealing with some of the dogs that everyone else has virtually given up on. His experience with both dogs and people have proven to be an amazing encounter.

I wonder today if we need more people who might engage themselves in our world and see their role as the "the Christ Whisperers" for our generation. It might involve spending time with people. It also might involve not giving up on people that others have given up on. It could mean not giving ourselves to "easy answers", but looking at the vastness of the life experience all around us.

How powerful could it be this week to "whisper a prayer" for someone that they might experience the transforming power of Jesus? Perhaps their life and ours could be changed. It's just a thought and a concept to consider while we enjoy coffee throughout the day. It may be a new way to approach life!

"Encouragement Needed"

Recently I received a letter from a fellow colleague in ministry who had in bold letters at the top of his letterhead these words, "Minister of Encouragement." I don't know about you, but that's just what I need. Every time I turn around, I seem to find many people who enjoy sharing their discouragements and hostility. What kind of world would it be if we had more people who were ministers of encouragement?

Laughter can be help to the many things that get us down. I remember a special man by the name of Grady Nutt. He died many years ago, but he was often referred to as the "Minister of Humor." Every time I had the opportunity to hear him speak, I went away refreshed and encouraged. He could tell the funniest stories and have everyone in the house falling out of their chairs with laughter. Laughter is needed in our lives. Laughter has a way of making a gloomy day seem bright again.

A former neighbor of mine told me a story about a man who moved down from the north. He wanted to know what the people were like down here and he wanted to find good neighbors. The lady asked him, "What kind of neighbors did you have in the place you moved from?" He said to her, "They were the worst neighbors you could ever have." The lady went on to say, "You probably won't like the neighbors down here either. If you will be a good neighbor, you will have good neighbors." There is much truth to what this wonderful lady had to say.

Let' s try to be good neighbors and encourage somebody this week!

Memories of Thanksgiving

I can remember so vividly the times when my parents and I would go and visit my Aunt Ree and Uncle Frank on Thanksgiving Day. There would be other family members present and we would sit around eating delicious food and watching football. My aunt always seemed to bring out the fruit cake. The traditional meal would include such things as Turkey and Dressing, and so many good things. The best thing about the day was being together with other friends and family members. We didn't have to "be anywhere" or "go anywhere", but just enjoy the moments.

Today our lifestyle is dramatically different, but we still enjoy being with family. We often chose chicken over turkey although we enjoy both. My wife makes a fantastic Sweet Potato Souffle. She makes a green bean casserole and we always enjoy good coffee. Best of all we are all together!

Cherish the moments and enjoy them because life has a way of changing before our very eyes.

"It's just not the same"

I'm sure there have been days for all of us when we have reflected on the past and talked about the many changes that have occurred. Life is full of changes everyday. Some of the changes are for the better while some of them may point us in a dismal direction. We can't go backwards, but we must move forward.

The Living Section of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution had an interesting list of top television shows in 1967 compared to 2006. Here are the shows that made the list.

The top TV shows in 1967 were:
The Andy Griffith Show
The Lucy Show
Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C
Gunsmoke
Family Affair

The top TV shows in 2006 are:
Grey's Anatomy
CSI
Desperate Housewives
Lost
Dancing with the Stars

The US Population has gone from 200 million in 1967 to 300 million in 2006. The price of a home was $ 24,600 in 1967 compared with $ 290,600 in 2006. The cost of gas in 1967 was 33 cents and now in 2006 has gone as high as $3.00 a gallon. The cost of a First Class Stamp in 1967 was 5 cents and now in 2006 it is 39 cents. The world population in 1967 was 3.5 billion and in 2006 it is 6.5 billion. The number of farms in 1967 totaled 3.2 million compared with 2.1 million in 2006.

One thing is for sure: "It's just not the same!"

"A Retreat in Savannah"

It's good to get away for a few days of retreat and renewal. Fifteen people from our church journeyed to the beautiful coastal city of Savannah. It is a city full of history and new beginnings. We shared devotion times together both in the early morning and in the late Evening. Participants of our retreat led us in wonderful times of devotion and prayer.

Retreats are always full of the unexpected and sometime catch us by surprise. We went to eat at Carey Hillard's restaurant on Sunday Evening and the most unusual thing happened. Our waiter came to the table carrying five glasses of water on his tray. All of a sudden, all five glasses of water came pouring down on my wife, Wilda, much like the scene of a coach getting water poured on him after the big game. The scene was simply amazing. Water went everywhere and ice cubes lined the floor. Our waiter, who had only been on the job two weeks didn't know what to do. I don't believe I've ever seen our group laugh so much. His fellow waiters got a pretty good laugh out of the situation as well. Such is the unexpected moments of life.

Some of our group members went on a Gospel Riverboat Cruise down the Savannah River. They enjoyed a big meal, and music on a big boat of tourists wanting a good time in the Evening. Others from our group found a unique place serving Italian food with excellent service. It was an Evening full of varied inspiration and fun.

Our hotel was located right across the street from Hunter-Army Airfield in Savannah. Those big planes would come soaring over the hotel making ready for a landing. Helicopters would come like yellow jackets trying to find a nest. They came in from almost every direction. It was really something.

The most amazing thing from the retreat was "fellowship." Every chance they got and late at night, members of our group could be found in the lobby playing games and drinking coffee. It was a time to enjoy being together. You never know what unexpected things will come our way. Get ready because some of the best moments of our lives might just happen today.

Are you ready?

"An Early Start to Labor Day"

Labor Day started early for me this year as it does most years. I participated once again in the running of the U.S. 10K Classic held each year in Marietta. It is a challenging course going from Cumberland Mall to Whitewater Park. It is mostly an uphill journey, but it is perhaps the most organized event that I will participate in all year long.

They have runners, walkers, cycles, in-line skaters, wheelchairs, and much more. Over 11,000 people get up on Labor Day very early to join in this endeavor that supports Charities that can help children. I am always amazed and astonished as the Green Berets come flying through the sky on their gliders carrying various banners. One of those will be the United States Flag which will fly prominently as the National Anthem is played. The Green Berets will land right on the starting line. It is something to behold.

I am always amazed at spectators along the way who get up early to find a great seat to cheer runners, participants, and family onward. Workers are eager to pass out water along the way. After you reach the finish line, there is a host of food, drink, music, and all sorts of things to help you celebrate the long endeavor.

It's easy to stay in bed, but some things on some days are just worth getting up for.

"The Dogs Days of Summer"

The "Dog days of Summer" have often referred to a period of time during the summer when the temperatures get hot and the humidity is humid. July and August have been in the midst of such a season. For the Atlanta Braves, the "Dog days of Summer" is taking on a new note. On Sunday, August 27th, the Atlanta Braves have made arrangements where an individual can bring their dog to the game with them. They have a special seat and price arrangement set up and the person must fax to the Braves a record of vaccinations. Can you imagine what the stadium will look and sound like on that Sunday?

People "bark" all the time at the umpires over questionable calls. Just imagine a stadium filled with dogs who are barking whenever and wherever they wish. Just imagine the vendor with popcorn or cotton candy and the dogs trying to take it away from him/her. The Braves have the "wave" which is an organized or disorganized attempt to get fan participation in standing up and sitting down in sequence to cheer the home team on. Imagine, the dogs who are used to such aerobic activity. What about the poor folks who clean up after the game is over. Normally, they are cleaning away the cups, coke, beer, and other items. The dogs will be long remembered by these folks as they clean their stinky and wastes. What a day to attend a Braves game!

Enjoy the day and opportunity to share what God is doing in such a beautiful and diverse world!
Ed

"A Friend"

Sometimes I might ask someone the question: "How many friends do you have?" They will usually respond with something like: "I've got worlds of friends - I just have so many friends." Either they didn't hear the question or we have a different interpretation over what constitutes a friend. John Blake in the "Living Section" of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution quotes a study by Duke University and would suggest that the average American now has only two people they can confide in which is nearly a one-third drop from 20 years ago.

There is something dynamic and wonderful about having a friend that you can open up your heart to. That friend will listen but never turn on you. That friend is someone you can call day or night. That friend is someone you can share your deepest and darkest secrets with. It is wonderful to find people that we can depend on and share special moments of our lives.

Some might blame computers and cell phones, but I would suggest that there is a "lack of trust." Just take a look at the popular bestseller list and many of the books are about people who have turned on what once was described as "a friend." Loyalty has become a lost art in our world as individuals forsake friendship for dollars or other relationships.

If you have a friend or two today, cherish them! Give thanks to God for the friends in your life! They will difficult to replace!

"Looking Up"

Have you ever felt like you were down in a deep hole looking up at everything and everyone around you? Does it seem like the world is moving at a very fast pace and somehow you are left behind? We sometimes spend much of our lives trying to "catch up" on the many things we miss.

Recently, I saw city workers digging a gigantic hole in order to put a sidewalk into place. Something seemed odd about that picture to me. I know almost nothing about preparing sidewalks, but the whole process seemed a bit strange and overblown to me. They are digging a hole just to cover it up once again.

It is good for us to "look up" from time to time and sense something bigger and greater than ourselves. We can discover a wonderful world that God has created and enjoy many who alongside of us are trying to make it a better place. Let's "look up" this week and sense the wonder of God's creation.

Ed

"Contagious"

When I hear the word "contagious", I think about various illnesses such as the flu that can be transmitted from one person to another. The word suggests to us something that is negative. We want to stay far away from someone who has a disease or illness that can be passed along to others. My wife is a long time teacher and educator in the local school system. It is sometimes difficult for teachers to avoid colds and the flu when they are constantly caring for such a diverse group of children.

The word "contagious" can be a positive one. Recently, I went to the local hospital to visit someone. From the time I got out of my car until the moment I reached the hospital of the person I was planning to visit, I was greeted over and over again by every hospital employee that I came in contact with. They spoke to me offering greetings and trying to do whatever they could do. I went away amazed at the kindness of the hospital staff. Such kindness is contagious and it makes you want to return kindness for kindness.

We could use that spirit of contagious affirmation and kindness throughout our world. Maybe it can begin with us this week!

Ed Galbreath

"All Shapes and Sizes"

One of the special events during the 4th of July in the Atlanta every year is the Peachtree Road Race. It is a gathering of 55,000 people who are participating in what is called the world's largest 10K race. Because my level of preparation for the event this year had not exceeded what I had planned to do, I made the decision not to run in the Peachtree. At the last minute, I reconsidered the decision and decided to run in the Peachtree Road race after all. I'm glad that I reconsidered because it is such a tremendous experience.

At the Peachtree, you can see all shapes and sizes of people at this event. Some people wore "hero" masks and decorations. Some dressed as Superman, Batman, or Spiderman. Some had the huge "Uncle Sam" dress hats. With 55,000 people you can see almost anything and everything. All along the roadway, there are many people cheering the crowd on. One little girl had a sign which said, "Go Aunt Amy." Radio Stations and politicians are soliciting support. A priest was throwing "holy water" on the runners. Fireman were sitting on top of their tall ladder truck waving the flag and waving to participants. One merchant was giving out coffee and bagels. (I would loved to have seen this merchant "before" or "after" the race, but not "during" the run).

There are serious runners who are trying to win the race and most of them are from Kenya. They would run the race in about 27 minutes. I had not reached the starting line before they were already finished. Most people are just average people who come to enjoy the race and get the prestigious Peachtree Road Race T-Shirt. Some have been running in the race for the past 25 years while others are running for the very first time.

I love the diversity and such represents the world we live in. Ours is a world full of all "shapes and sizes." We can celebrate our diversity and draw strength from one another. Perhaps that is a good lesson for us to learn even when there is not such a big race in town.

"Viewing the Game"

I went with my son to Turner Field to watch the Atlanta Braves play the Boston Red Sox. It was a beautiful evening for baseball with a near capacity crowd. It was the Sunday Night ESPN game with a national audience tuning in. The stage was set for a great pitching match up between John Smoltz of the Braves and Curt Shilling of the Red Sox. I was amazed at how many Red Sox fans made it out for the game. While I love to watch the Braves on TV, there is just something about "being there."

It was a great game that evening and the crowd really got into the game. There is just something about going to a night game where the graphics, diamond vision, and all the lights put together a beautiful scene. You can see just about anything you want to see at a Braves game. What a diverse group of people coming together to enjoy a good ballgame.

It was not until the 6th inning that my son (Paul) and I realized something that was happening right in front of us. A couple sat in front of us and the gentleman was faithfully listening to the game on his radio. That's not unusual and I frequently take my radio to pick up on commentary of the game by the Braves announcers. We came to realize that this man was blind. He could not see the players, the bright lights, the faces of people around him, or anything else. My son and I were touched by this experience. This man was not letting obstacle and hurdles in his life keep him from doing what he wanted to do. He experienced the game as he heard the crowd and this for him was a night to remember.

From the 6th inning on, we viewed the game in a different way. My thanks to this blind man who taught many of us something about how to view the game.

"Opening Day"

There is just something special about "Opening Day" at Turner Field as the Atlanta Braves begin a new season. For many years, I made it a point to attend the Opening Day game. There is just something unique about the experience. There is the newness of the moment and a spirit of expectancy in the air. "Opening Day" is almost a tradition with many people. It is just one of those special moments that many people enjoy attending.

I saw a Marta Bus in Atlanta just the other day and it had these words written across the body of the bus: "In Atlanta, everyday is Opening Day." I thought about those words for a few minutes. I understand the thrust of the message. Somehow, it is trying to create a spirit of expectancy and anticipation for the city of Atlanta. It is trying to convey the idea that everyday is special and full of new possibilities. Those words, "everyday is Opening Day", makes the suggestion that something new is happening everyday. It is very clear at least to me that "everyday is not Opening Day!" Much of life is spent in ordinary time and place. Birthdays do not come everyday (thank goodness), but once a year we celebrate a special day. Anniversaries do not come everyday, but once a year we pause to celebrate a special day. If "Opening Day" came everyday, it would lose it's excitement and it would no longer hold that special place of anticipation.

Special things can happen even during the saga of ordinary time. It's not "Opening Day" and while there may not be any fireworks, it can be special. By enjoying ordinary days, we can enjoy the "Opening Days" of our lives even more.

"Dog Wash or Car Wash"

My daughter and I were riding down a road near our house when she observed the most interesting thing. As we looked over at a self-serve car wash, there were people washing and shining their cars on this bright and beautiful day. My daughter pointed out something that I had never seen before. I had driven past this car wash many, many times, but I had not noticed everything they had to offer. Right next to the car wash was a "Dog Wash." I had never seen anything like this before. What an amazing concept! Here is a one stop shop where you can clean either car or dog.

We have a little Yorkshire Terrier dog at our place and I was very interested in this place. A week or so later, I stopped by to take a closer look. There is a table where you can place the dog and hose to clean the dog. You place $5.00 in the meter and you have numerous options. First you can sanitize the table with a special spray and then you can wash your dog. There are numerous settings: Wash, rinse, dry, flea & tick bath, or de-skunk. I haven't taken my dog there yet, but what an amazing concept.

There are so many neat and helpful things right in front of us. If we are not careful, we will get busy and miss some of the things that can make our lives just a little easier. I'm not sure whether I will use the "Dog Wash" or not, but I am reminded to watch for new and creative things around me.

As we start a new week or begin a new transition, we can be open to wonderful things around us. Our God has made a beautiful world - let's enjoy it this week!

"How much is too much?"

I heard a small group talking about where they like to purchase a good cup of coffee. There were quite a number of places shared that ranged from Starbucks to McDonalds to Krystal. It may not be too co-incidental that the gentleman who opted for Krystal's coffee also worked for the company for many years. So many things influence our choice. The conversation got around to the issue of "How much is too much to spend for a cup of coffee?" Is it really worth spending the extra money at a specialty coffee shop?

We all have some idea based on what is too much for us at the time. I can remember playing golf some years ago on a little course in Jackson, Georgia. We had a great group of men playing golf. Suddenly, it turned cold and the wind would almost blow right through you. We were approaching the 9th hole and I had already decided when we got into the clubhouse, I was going to buy a pullover cap and a hot cup of coffee. In one of those rare moments, I didn't care what it costs!

Years ago it would have seemed inconceivable that someone would spend nearly $3.00 a gallon for gas. Is it worth it? We can pay it or we can stay home. Perhaps many of us have changed some of our casual travel habits. The question still comes to us: "How much is too much?" There are some many items that we find ourselves investing in and we wonder if the cost it too great.

I hear stories from people who complain that they attended an Atlanta Braves Baseball game and as a family they spent $200-$300 for the event. Is it worth it? For one person it may be worth it, but to another it would not. A family of four could sit in the Lexus level and it would cost them $ 136. They could eat stadium food and easily spend $80 or more. With parking and a program their cost could run over $230. On the other hand, that same family could watch the same ballgame from the Upper Pavilion at a cost of $5 per person. They could bring their hotdogs, peanuts, and colas from home and attend a game for about $30. The question is "What is more important and what are we willing to pay?"

Choices, Choices, and more choices come our way everyday. I'm thrilled to have more choices and to explore what is really important. For most of us, we will continue the pilgrimage each day as we ask the question over and over and over again, "How much is too much?"

"Getting Started"

Where do I start? Have you ever wondered where to start as you begin a new day? As I sat down at my computer today, I found myself going through stacks and stacks of papers from previous days and trying to sort them into some usable fashion. Getting started can be a challenge for many of us. Perhaps one of the most important aspects of beginning the day is separating the important from the mundane. I find myself asking, "What is the most important thing I must do today?"

Spring has brought numerous outdoor projects for our family as we have decided to tackle improvements in the yard. We have been adding two new flower beds and planting our garden. Numerous other projects are nearing a state of readiness. Where do we start? I guess that's the question we raise in the midst of so many items on the agenda.

As I traveled recently to a nearby city, I pondered how to get started. I looked at the best way to get where I wanted to go. I tried to decide on the best route and what time I would leave. I used an online map to help with the process although it wasn't exact. The big thing is starting the journey.

What kind of journey will we start this week? Life is full of unique and special opportunities. Let's get started and enjoy a wonderful spring!

"The Best time of the Year"

At Christmastime each year, I enjoy hearing the lovely song which says "It's the most wonderful time of the year." Yes, Christmas is filled with joy and laughter.

I enjoy spring and the beauty of the season. As I walk throughout my neighborhood, I see children playing, people walking, and neighbors planting their favorite flowers and plants for the season. It is a season to be outdoors and to enjoy the beautiful weather. I stopped by a plant outlet recently and it took two police officers to direct all the traffic into the store. People gathered with excitement about their flowers and gardens.

It's a wonderful season to see young people involved in community activities such as baseball and softball. Many people are going fishing or getting ready to make a trip to the mountains or the beach.

It's a wonderful time of the year! Let's enjoy it!

"A Day with Nature"

Sometimes it's easy for us to forget what a beautiful world we live in. We find ourselves getting caught up in the agenda of everyday life with all the details and responsibilities that implies. It's easy to get stuck in front of the computer screen with all the programs and jobs we are involved in. There have been days when I have been indoors all day long, but somehow I search to reach the outdoors full of space and newness.

Our Church group went on an interesting journey this week as we gathered at Indian Springs State Park. Interestingly enough, this is the oldest state park in the nation. What a beautiful and lovely place it is. There is something for almost everybody. We got a takeout order from the local barbeque restaurant and we enjoyed a picnic at the park. There are great places to have a picnic. We saw people putting sulfur water into bottles to take home with them. Tradition has it that this has been used for healing through the years. The park has a beautiful lake for fishing. They even have boats and paddleboats for rent. They have a swimming area to enjoy the spring and summer. They have a wonderful camping area equipped with electricity, water, and even cable. There are so many great camping sites in shaded areas ready for people to enjoy. Our group explored a very old and historic cemetery located inside the state park.

Take the challenge this week and get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. State Parks can be a wonderful idea close to home and provide for a wonderful outing with friends and family!

"Remembering"

I can remember just a few years ago, watching Kyle Davies play in the North Henry Baseball League. My son, Paul, and a host of other young people were playing and competing in youth baseball. I can remember Kyle hitting the ball out of the ballpark with ease. It's just a few years later, but now Kyle is one of the starting pitchers for the Atlanta Braves. Time seems to go by in a hurry doesn't it? It seems like just the other day when Andrew Jones joined the Atlanta Braves. Now, they speak of Andrew as the veteran leader of the team as he gives pointers to the younger players. Time is going by quickly!

I can remember the day when fans would yell and share their favorite remarks from the stands. I heard just the other day how fans now can send a text message from the cell phone to the score board operator and have their message put on the big message board. My how times have changed!

Many of us can remember the days when the local high school prom was held in the High School Gymnasium or cafeteria. Some local schools are holding their prom in the Atlanta Aquarium, the College of Art & Design, and the Biltmore House. My how times have changed!

I can remember when Sunday was a day when people felt good about going to church. On my way to church, I see so many people mowing their grass, painting their houses, and doing almost anything except going to church. My how times have changed. Maybe this is a good time to think about the many ways things have changed. If we haven't changed for the better, perhaps we can change our ways and find a better way. It's worth thinking about!

"Planting new seeds"

As I walk around my neighborhood, there is the spring fever that has people planting various plants and shrubs in their yards. Some are concentrating on flowers and trees, while others are busy getting things ready for their vegetable gardens. People are busy purchasing their tomato plants, bell peppers, and my favorite, jalapeños. So many are tilling their gardens, staking their plants, and getting ready for springtime.

This has been a wonderful time for conversation throughout the neighborhood as you see people talking to other people as they engage in the task at hand. Kids are playing outdoors, some people are getting their pools ready for summer, others are walking and jogging, while others are just enjoying the outdoors.

This has been a season when I have turned off my heating and air and I rejoice in whatever savings will come my way. While the temperatures have been slightly above normal in our area, things will change and before long the temperatures will return to what is normal. It's a changing season full of unique and different turns.

Sometimes, we need to stop and ponder exactly what kind of seeds we are planting. I'm not talking now about the corn, butter beans, or peas. I'm talking about the seeds we are planting in the lives of other people. Seeds that we plant in the garden will benefit us only for a season, but the seeds we plant in the lives of others can continue to grow throughout a lifetime. Let's plant some new seeds today!

"More than a T-Shirt"

The Peachtree Road race is an incredible 10K event held on July 4th of each year in the city of Atlanta. It is more than a race, it is a tradition and a cherished event. About 55,000 runners will begin the race near Lenox Square Mall. The race will go down Peachtree Street and end at Piedmont Park. The runners are divided into 9 groups. Those in group one are serious runners and they will run the race in record time. Those back in group nine are not so serious. They are running just for fun. They are trying to stay ahead of the street cleaners who will come behind them. Group nine is led by Atlanta radio personality, Clark Howard. We call them "Howard's Heroes."

One of the things I like best about the day is that thousands of people in Atlanta are coming together for a common goal. They are all in the same race together and it is a very special time for most. There is much to see and much to do throughout the day. The ultimate goal and aim for the runners is to get the prized "Peachtree T-Shirt." The T-Shirt is a symbol of accomplishment and something to be proud of.

Such an event takes more than just runners. It is surrounded by a host of thousands planning the event, offering water to runners along the course, and making sure that everything goes as planned. There are so many people behind the scenes working diligently throughout the event.

It's good to see people come together in positive ways to build and enhance life. That's a worthy goal for many of us this week. Just maybe we can help shape the future of other's around us as they move forward toward the goals they set!

"Running the Race"

Every time we turn around, we are exposed to a new race or walk in our community. The March of Dimes will be promoting their "WalkAmerica" walk later this month. Walks will be planned for diabetes, breast cancer, Alzheimer's disease, the American Heart Association and many more. Organizations have found these walks to be extremely popular and profitable. It is a way to provide information and funds for research.

Walking is not only good for organizations raising money, it is good for us. Walking is one of the best exercises we can engage in. We can walk at our own pace and increase our distance as we feel appropriate. Walking is something we can do by ourselves, with friends, with family, or even with the the family dog.

The writer of Hebrews (Hebrews12) speaks of "running with patience the race that is set before us." We are called to look at the bigger picture of life which involves our faith and how we will live it out in our lives. These are exciting days to run the race of faith and feel the encouragement of others who are running alongside us.

"The Next Chapter"

Do you enjoy reading a good book? I have developed a habit of picking up a book and taking a stroll through the table of contents. It is at that point that I will decide whether or not I will make the journey through the entire book. Sometimes, it fascinating to look at the next chapter and see what is right around the corner. Getting to the "next chapter" can be a wonderful experience or it can be a disappointing one.

"Turning the next chapter" of our lives can be much more challenging. Many young people from the gulf coast region affected by Hurricane Katrina are now in our local schools. They, along with their parents are trying to "turn another chapter in their lives." For many, that can prove to be of the most difficult times of their lives. It is certainly full of challenges.

I know of others who are challenged as they turn to the next chapter in their lives. For many experiencing divorce, it is a challenging time as they deal with all the complications that life can bring. Losing a spouse or close relative to death can also make the next chapter of their lives more difficult. Not only do they deal with the emotional loss, but sometimes the financial loss can be overwhelming as well.

At church, we have been focusing our attention on the season of Lent. Lent tries to prepare us for the next chapter that is ahead. During Lent, we focus upon many areas including the Passion of Christ and the death of Jesus on the Cross. If it ended there, it would be a most difficult and discouraging situation. Thankfully, the next chapter includes Resurrection! That's a chapter worth reading over and over again.

"No Name Road"

Have you ever felt like you lived on "No Name Road?" I've heard the testimony through the years from many people who felt like they lived in the dullest and most uninteresting place. They have said: "Nothing interesting ever happens here." As one who has lived much of my life in rural south Georgia, I can understand exactly how they feel. I can remember living twenty minutes away from the nearest grocery store. It's easy at times to feel isolated and alone.

I found it interesting that this road sign pictured above came from a street in the busy city of Stockbridge right down the street from a high school, middle school, elementary school, private school, and a fire station. It is located in one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. None-the-less, "No Name Road" is there.

In the early morning as we take the first cup of coffee for the day, we might well wonder what big things might happen today in our little world. The beginning of a new day brings wonder and anticipation. It also brings caution, concern, and even fear. Today is a day full of little things that occupy our time throughout the day. Giant things also have a way of coming our way just when we would least expect them.

While we might travel down "No name Road" today, we can rest assured that we have a name and it is special. God knows our name and has created us in his own image. Today can be a special day as we recognize the uniqueness of the time before us. Let us remember today the words of Robert Frost who said: "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference."

"A Lesson from Toby"

Do you have a pet? As I walk around my neighborhood, I fine very few homes that do not have either a dog, a cat, or both. Having pets has become big business for many people. There are Pet Stores, Pet Salons, Pet Supermarkets, Pet Groomers, Pat Kennels, and even Pet Motels. I was amazed several years ago when I went to Chastain Park to participate in a charity walk supporting Crohn's disease. So many people had their dogs with them. They had treats for the dogs and periodic water bowls all along the race route. One event that I attended had a dog contest at the beginning of the race.

Our dog is a Yorkshire Terrier named "Toby." His previous owner gave him this name from the country and western singer, Toby Keith. Like many Yorkshire Terriers, Toby is a high maintenance dog. One of the songs that Toby Keith made popular describes the temperament of our dog, Toby. It is entitled: "I wanna talk about me." Toby looks for three things: (1) he wants food, (2) he needs to potty, and (3) he wants to be loved. For a complex dog, he has very simple needs.

While drinking my cup of coffee and eating my bagel at breakfast, I am reminded that we have a similar need and desire to be loved. Even when we are having a troublesome day, we can know that we are loved by God. Maybe we can share that love with someone today!

"Seize the particles of Kindness"

There was a kind and gracious individual that I had the privilege to know and have conversation with over the past few years. His name was Derrek Palmer and he was one of the kindest individuals I've ever met in my life. He walked with a crutch and cared for his two small children. I would see him at the local elementary school as a parent volunteer. For a time, he was an officer in the PTO. He was always well dressed and he always took the time to speak. He would go out of his way to come up to me and engage in conversation. He would thank me for some of the things I was involved in through the school. His kindness always had a positive impact in my life.

While traveling on a road in south Georgia, Derrick was involved in an automobile accident. The word came that Derrick had died. I could hardly believe it. This 45 year old man who was so full of kindness, vitality, and caring, was now taken from us. I will truly miss my conversation with this fine gentleman.

It is easy to assume that everything will be the way it has always been. Sometimes it is difficult to deal the the "stones in the road" of life. The future is often uncertain and we are called to rise and meet the new challenges of the day.

As I drink my coffee today, I will remember the legacy of this fine individual. I am thankful that he has shared particles of kindness in my life. I believe that he has made a difference in the lives of many people. We would do well to seize the moments of kindness in our lives. Maybe today, we can have a positive impact in the life of someone we meet.

"A Journey to the Mountains"

The words from Isaiah 52 declare: "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, Your God reigns!"

While on vacation recently, I passed by some of the most amazing places.
There is such a beauty in nature as the handiwork of God surrounds us on our journey. There are tall mountains and deep valleys. There are rivers flowing between the mountains and there is a unique sense of beauty, majesty, and creativity. While traveling through this place of wonder, something else almost happened. I was very busy looking for the next major road and I almost missed the beauty around me. I was in a hurry to get to my destination and I was frustrated that the journey was taking so long. I almost missed the beauty of the moment.
How many times have we got busy in our normal activities doing many good and needful things? During those times, perhaps we have missed some of the special things that come along simply because we were too busy to see it. Someone has said, "Stop and smell the roses!" In our haste and our waste, that is good advice.

Take a moment or two to give thanks for the "little things" that come our way. Those "little" things might not be "little" after all!Enjoy a cup of coffee and reflect on those "little" things in our lives.

"Don't miss the flowers"

Last spring, we planted a flower bed of Vinnias in our front yard near the sidewalk. It was simply beautiful. This beautiful bed of flowers exceeded our wildest expectations. Many people would come by and tell us how beautiful these flowers were. One day a lady passed by our house walking and pushing the stroller of her young son. She stopped and looked at the flowers. I was standing on the front porch at the time and I thought she was just admiring the beautiful flowers. She spoke to me and told me that her son enjoyed seeing “bugs.” Instead of looking at the beauty of flowers, they were looking for bugs.

As I thought about this experience, I was reminded that this is the very way that many people view life. Instead of seeing all the good and beautiful things around them, they concentrate on the one negative element they can find. Some look at the cup half empty, while others look at the cup half full. How do we commonly look at life?

When I visit the mountains, I am amazed at the creative wonder of our God. It is simply something wonderful to behold. Likewise, I enjoy the beach and looking out into the water. There is a sparkle and a beauty that simply cannot be fully described.
How wonderful it is to see the face of a young child full of hope and full of dreams.

We will see many things this week in our lives. Unfortunately, not everything is we see is good. Our world is full of pain, hurt, and heartache. But as we look at our own windows this week, let’s look for the good. We can spend our whole lives looking at the bugs and miss the beauty of God’s creation.

"Coffee and Computers"

I saw a billboard a few days ago that said: "Find a Mercedes-Benz on your coffee break." I must confess that it would take more than a coffee break to fit the price of such a wonderful car into my shrinking budget. Nevertheless, the billboard does remind us of how our computers can assist us in the daily decisions that we make.

One of the standard features for many local coffee shops is the capability for high speed online access. It's not enough to visit the local Starbucks cafe and enjoy a Cappuccino or the coffee of the day, but we want more from the time we spend at the coffee shop. Those in the business community can chat together over coffee while getting some work accomplished. Others enjoy a coffee and a bagel while checking their e-mail. It is amazing to think of the many uses we find everyday for our computers.

While I use my computer for many things, I especially enjoy the opportunity to send and receive e-mail from special friends and family members. If it were not for e-mail, the communication with these friends would be greatly reduced. It is good for each of us to think about ways that our computers can enhance our relationship with other people. I've heard many people express their reluctance to purchase a computer in the fear that it will reduce their personal contact with others. My experience has been a very different one and the computer has enhanced my relationship with other people.

There are some wonderful tools at our fingertips. How will we use them this week? It is something to think about!

"How do we measure Progress?"

We moved into our current home 15 months ago. As we would look across the fence in our backyard, we could see cows grazing in the pasture. What an enjoyable sight to behold every morning and every evening. As I look across my fence today, I see bulldozers, cranes, and tractors. They are converting the peaceful pasture into a lively subdivision of new homes. As I look across my fence, I wonder "Is this progress?"

The county where I reside is one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. I am told that by the year 2030, my county will double in population. This requires more roads, more schools, more homes, and more development. I wonder if this is "really progress?"

Progress is sometimes hard to measure. The progress of children in our schools is often measured by testing. We put great value in such tests as the CRCT, PSAT, and the SAT. Do these and other tests really measure progress?

How do we measure progress? While we sit in our coffee shops full of good conversation around the table, we might ask ourselves, "What is really progress?"

"Celebrating the moments of the day"

I recently went to check-in at a hotel for a conference I was attending. I was a little early, but I decided to go ahead and stop by the hotel and see if my room was available. The clerk indicated that the rooms were being cleaned and it would be just a few minutes. I decided to sit down for a minutes in the lobby and wait. It felt so good just to sit down for a few moments and just enjoy the moment.

Have you paused in your day just to enjoy this moment in time? For many of us, our schedules are busy and we have so many things to do. We rush from one detail to another. There are times when I enjoy a good cup of coffee when I am all alone and I can pause for a few minutes just to enjoy the moments of the day. Quiet moments can be special and offer new energy for the day.

Perhaps coffee is best shared with friends. I enjoy the opportunity to gather around the table in festive conversation as the day is enjoyed with other people. It is in such gatherings that we realize that we are not alone. There are others around us who share our joys, our sorrows, and our challenges. They help us to make the day special.

I hope your day will be special. Enjoy the day with others and celebrate the gift of life our God gives to us.

"What does it take to be the best?"

How do you really judge a good cup of coffee? What do you like a cup of coffee to be like? Do you enjoy a cup of flavored coffee or you would you prefer to stick with a more traditional coffee? There are so many different ideas and different ways of achieving the taste we like. I enjoy drinking coffee on many occasions, but there is nothing like the first cup of coffee in the morning. For me, the first cup is the best.

It's January and the race for the Super bowl is on. Who is the best football team? Who will win the Super bowl this year? Will it be the Pittsburg Steelers or will it be the Seattle Seahawks? It's exciting to see the teams trying so hard to be the very best they can be.

There are days when we are just not at our best. It might be that we are tired and we have lost our energy. It could be that we are sick and battling cold and flu symptoms. Perhaps there are other times when we simply get distracted by other things and the focus of our life might be shifted if only for a season.

There is good news that our God can come into our lives and bring us renewed hope, passion, and life. God can come to us in the seasons of doubt and distraction and give us a new hope for future days. As we strive to be our best, let us remember that we are not alone.

"So many choices"

Wilda and I really enjoy our freshly ground Columbian Supreme coffee by Millstone every morning. We have tried instant coffee and we have tried ground coffee, but nothing compares to freshly ground coffee in the morning.

We also enjoy the opportunity to stop in at Starbucks or Barnies Coffee Shop. I'm always amazed at how many different varieties of coffee they offer. There are so many choices. They have light roast, dark roast, latte, espresso, cappuccino, and everything in between. Sometimes it might seem easier if they served my everyday coffee without so many choices. But choices make the experience special and expose me to new possibilities.

There may be days when we would hope that other people would think like we do and react to life in the same way that we would. Plurality can bring tension, but it can also expand our understanding of life and new ideas. We learn from each other and life can be enriched because of these experiences.

Thank goodness for choices and the many special people that I learn from everyday!

Ed Galbreath

Ed Galbreath

"Breakfast with Burl"

I can remember growing up in and around Savannah, Georgia during the early days of my life. One of the radio stations in Savannah had a very popular personality by the name of Burl Womack. His early morning show went by the name, "Breakfast with Burl." He would have his coffee cup in hand and you could almost smell the aroma. Burl had the unique gift and incredible challenge of making "morning special."

I saw a t-shirt one day that had these words on it, "I'm allergic to mornings." During my early days, I could clearly understand the meaning of those words. Some (like me) might chose to get up very early in the morning. Others, enjoy the late night and they are most productive when the sun goes down. In either case, there is something beautiful and positive about life. We live and breath in a world created so wonderfully by our God.

Feel free to join me when you have a chance for "A Coffee Break." Take a moment in the day and enjoy the aroma of life. Celebrate the giver of life as we share it with others.
